About Sapio Sciences
Sapio Sciences is on a mission to accelerate scientific discovery and high-throughput clinical and diagnostic services. We bring together scientists, engineers, and industry specialists to build a unified lab informatics platform that helps organisations move faster, work smarter, and generate deeper insight from their data.
Artificial intelligence is central to how we innovate and operate. Within our platform, AI enhances how laboratories structure, interpret, and act on scientific data. Across our business, we apply AI thoughtfully to improve efficiency, scalability, and decision-making. It is not an add-on or future ambition. It is embedded in how we build, deliver, and continuously improve.
Our platform unifies ELN, LIMS, and scientific data management within a highly configurable environment. Scientists, laboratory professionals, and bioinformaticians rely on Sapio to manage end-to-end laboratory operations, from instrument integration and experiment setup to sample management, data analysis, and reporting. We design solutions that are powerful yet practical, enabling teams to focus on science rather than systems.

About the role
Sapio Sciences is looking for a People Operations Lead to be the operational backbone of a lean, high-impact People function. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives at the intersection of people, process, and technology — equally comfortable running payroll, advising a manager on a sensitive conversation, and redesigning a workflow to make it better.
Working location
This is a fully remote role, open to candidates based in the United States. You will collaborate regularly with colleagues across both geographies and be available during core business hours in your region. This role reports directly to the Global Head of People.
Essential Responsibilities
- Own the accuracy and completeness of all employee data across HRIS and related systems; identify and drive system integrations and automation opportunities to reduce manual effort and improve data integrity.
- Execute semi-monthly and bi-weekly payroll processing for a global employee population, ensuring accuracy and compliance across multiple geographies, and partner with Finance on reconciliation and reporting.
- Administer first-line compensation and benefits processes, including offer letter generation, merit cycle data management, enrolments, life events, and carrier coordination; serve as the primary employee-facing contact for benefits enquiries.
- Own the full onboarding experience from offer acceptance through the first 90 days and manage offboarding end-to-end; continuously improve both processes based on employee feedback and operational efficiency opportunities.
- Serve as the first point of contact for employee questions and concerns, providing accurate, timely, and empathetic responses; triage employee relations matters and escalate complex or risk-bearing issues to the Head of People appropriately.
- Coordinate and execute annual and mid-year performance review cycles, including timeline management, system configuration, communication rollouts, and manager and employee support.
- Maintain standard HR dashboards and reporting cadences (headcount, attrition, compensation, hiring activity); respond to ad hoc reporting requests and proactively surface data trends or anomalies to leadership.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of HR/People Operations experience, ideally in a fast-moving, technology-driven, or PE-backed company environment.
- Hands-on payroll processing experience required; multi-state or global payroll experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with HRIS platforms (e.g. Rippling, Workday, BambooHR, or similar); comfort building or improving system workflows.
- Working knowledge of benefits administration, leave management, and employment compliance fundamentals across relevant jurisdictions.
- Strong data skills — you can build a pivot table, spot an error, and present clean numbers confidently; experience supporting or executing performance review cycles and compensation processes.
Required Skills & Abilities
- You’re proactive and solutions-oriented, you identify problems before they escalate and come prepared with a recommendation, not just a question.
- You’re comfortable with ambiguity and thrive in environments where not every process is fully defined, so you ask the right questions, exercise good judgment, and keep things moving.
- You exercise strong judgment about what to resolve independently and what to escalate, keeping leadership appropriately informed without requiring handholding on routine matters.
- You’re highly organised and reliable, colleagues and stakeholders trust you to meet deadlines, follow through on commitments, and keep all the moving parts in order.
- You handle sensitive situations with discretion, professionalism, and empathy, people feel comfortable coming to you precisely because you’re trustworthy and approachable.
- You’re a natural systems thinker who looks for smarter ways to work, you spot inefficiency, ask the right questions, and drive improvements that make the whole team more effective.
- Experience in a life sciences, biotech, or SaaS company environment; familiarity with UK or other international employment practices; exposure to equity administration is all advantageous.
- PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent certification is a plus.
