Matrix EducationAbout Matrix Education
Matrix Education is Australia’s leading and fastest-growing tuition college for ambitious students from Year 3 to Year 12. For over 25 years, we’ve helped tens of thousands of students achieve their academic goals through remarkable teaching, fanatical customer support, and exceptional outcomes.
We’re now in the middle of something exciting. Matrix is expanding nationally, growing our online platform Matrix+, and re-thinking what new techniques and technologies can unlock within our already world-class learning programs. Matrix+ already has several thousand enrolments each year, but we see enormous potential in bringing the Matrix brand of education to more students through this digital channel.
About the role
You’ll start by running recruitment for our casual teacher and tutor workforce, building the talent pipeline, working hand in hand with hiring managers, and using Employment Hero and AI-assisted hiring tools to do it well. As the business grows and the function matures, the role will naturally evolve with it, opening up into onboarding, reporting, and culture work. You won’t stay fixed in recruitment; you’ll grow into the full breadth of P&C as Matrix needs it.
You’ll work directly with and be mentored by our Head of P&C, a senior HR leader who genuinely wants to develop the person in this role, not just fill a seat. This is a real opportunity to take the next step in your career inside a small, high-trust function where your impact is visible and your growth is deliberate.
About you
You might currently be in a larger, more established HR team, and you’re ready for something smaller and more hands-on by choice. You know what structure and process look like, and now you want to build them yourself rather than operate inside someone else’s. Equally, you might already be working in a small or mid-size environment and know exactly what that trade-off involves. Either way, you’re making a conscious call to own more, earlier.
You don’t need a background in education. What you need is strong recruitment instincts, genuine comfort with ambiguity, and the drive to grow into more.
Key responsibilities
- Run recruitment, starting with our casual teacher and tutor workforce, from role posting through to offer, working hand in hand with hiring managers rather than at arm’s length
- Explore and adopt AI-assisted tools across recruitment and HR operations, from hiring to onboarding and the ongoing employee experience to work smarter and create better experiences for everyone involved
- Run onboarding from offer acceptance through a new starter’s first weeks, and look for ways to make it genuinely better
- Keep Employment Hero accurate and current , the foundation for reliable reporting and data across the business
- Be a first point of contact for employees and managers, answering general enquiries and building trust as a reliable partner
- Contribute to policy development, helping make sure Matrix has the right policies in place as the business grows
- Contribute to real People & Culture projects, whether that’s reporting, culture initiatives, or process improvements, with support from the Head of P&C as you build
Experience and qualifications
- 3–5 years’ experience across HR, with broad exposure to the employee lifecycle, recruitment, onboarding, performance, and employee relations
- Direct, hands-on experience with Employment Hero or a similar HRIS, used well
- Working knowledge of Australian employment law and WHS obligations
- Some experience contributing to policies, procedures, or HR reporting, even if not leading these independently
- HR qualification or equivalent practical experience
Builder mindset and generalist instinct
This is important to us. We’re not looking for someone who wants a function handed to them, fully formed. We want someone who sees a still-forming remit as real opportunity, and who treats “no one’s decided how this should work yet” as an invitation, not a red flag.
- Comfortable defining how something should work when there isn’t an existing template to follow
- Energised by taking on a broad, still-forming remit rather than a narrowly defined one
- Genuinely wants breadth, recruitment, systems, policy, culture, over specialising in one lane
Skills and attributes
- Passion for education and the impact it has on young people
- High ownership, with sound judgement under ambiguity
- Clear, warm communicator, equally comfortable with managers and employees.
- Collaborative and low-ego, builds trust quickly across the business
- Genuinely curious, always looking to build something better than what came before
