HR Leadership & Strategy
FII is pleased to offer an exciting one-year term opportunity for a dynamic human resources professional based in Vancouver. The Director, Human Resources works in the Corporate Services program. They lead human resource strategy development and implementation within the organization, while providing expert advice on HR-related matters. Working closely with the Executive team, the Director identifies HR opportunities and issues and works to ensure the appropriate supporting policies and procedures are in place to achieve the organization’s business goals, while integrating cultural differences across offices. The Director proactively builds and maintains strong, effective working relationships, building towards effective team dynamics and excellence in people management.

The Director is responsible for all areas of recruitment, selection, onboarding; employee engagement,retention; talent management, compensation, job evaluation; competency and staff training and development; performance evaluation and management; employee relations; succession planning; and termination in the head office, as well as the overseas subsidiaries. FII operates under the guidance and direction of the Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC), a BC Government agency responsible for Crown corporation compensation. As such, the position also interacts with senior-level provincial government representatives on matters related to accountable compensation practices as well as the Crown Corporations Employers’ Association (CCEA) on matters related to HR practices.

Working in a small team environment, fast-paced, high-performing and culturally diverse organization, the Director ensures all FII operations are in alignment with the company strategies, values and mandate. The position requires a high level of strategic thinking, business management expertise, hands-on delivery, and experience supporting operational managers in a diverse corporate makeup. Acting as a role model and a liaison between employees and executive, the incumbent works to ensure an inclusive, open and respectful culture. Experience working with international subsidiary companies amid complex social and cultural environments and developing and maintaining strong relationships is a key success factor for this position.

This is a standalone position reporting to the VP and Chief Financial Officer and has no direct reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
HR Leadership and Executive Support

  • Provide support and expertise to the Executive team on HR and employee relations issues
  • Provide advice and guidance to all employees to ensure the critical business functions of the company are supported by efficient and effective HR practices and processes across all offices
  • Ensure the organization’s succession plan addresses corporate risks and is updated and maintained on a regular basis
  • Provide guidance and advice to international subsidiary staff on HR related matters
  • Lead and facilitate employee-related committees/working groups – Joint Occupational Health & Safety; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and Social
 
Strategic HR Management and Delivery

  • Responsible for forming the development and implementation of an HR strategy that supports the company’s mandate to proactively position BC’s forest products and building solutions in the global marketplace which includes identifying required skill sets, positions and writing job descriptions
  • Oversee all performance evaluation reviews and processes to ensure a consistent, integrated and comprehensive performance management system
  • Ensure the objectives of the total compensation strategy address the company’s ability to competitively attract, motivate, develop and retain passionate customer‐focused individuals with the depth of skills, knowledge and competencies required to achieve our strategic and operational priorities while supporting the goals of our government mandate; inspire and support high performance, accountability and fiscal responsibility; link recognition to organization and individual performance; create a solid relationship with employees that is built on trust, fair treatment and mutual respect; complement the intrinsic value of our innovative and team‐based work environment
  • Develop a workplan that is clearly correlated to address and maintain ongoing HR activities required to achieve the company’s business outcomes and strategic people management initiatives
  • Develop briefing notes, business cases and required analysis to support HR options and decisions
  • Develop and deliver HR workshops and presentations on a variety of topics such as standards of conduct, appropriate workplace behaviour and organizational change
  • Provide ongoing development and/or maintenance of policies and processes to address HR activities such as job evaluation and classification, salary plan and administration including performance management, employee training and development, employee recognition, workplace wellness, orientation of new employees, and succession planning
  • Influence and contribute to best practices adoption and excellence initiatives to develop executive and management leadership
 
Human Resources Management and Implementation

  • Working within the framework of public sector practices and PSEC guidelines, implement all HR activities in the employee lifecycle, including but not limited to recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention; employee engagement; compensation; job evaluation; competency identification and staff training and development; performance management; change management; employee relations and succession planning; diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; as well as termination
  • Work with internal staff to research and identify workforce requirements, gaps or deficiencies and keep informed of current trends
  • Ensure training and development initiatives and lunch and learn program address employee and business objectives
  • Build marketing, branding and communication practices into HR applications in order to build FII’s employer brand
  • Provide advice and guidance on employment standards, human rights laws and government mandates to ensure the highest level of compliance and fairness
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and promote a team approach and collaboration within all business units, ensuring understanding of transparent and consistent application of policies and procedures
  • Work towards ensuring that HR practices promote an inclusive, highly efficient, effective and respectful workplace culture


PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate joins FII with strategic human resources and hands-on experience. Specific skills and experiences required include:


  • 10+ years related experience and 5+ years in a senior position, preferably in both public and private sectors, leading an HR function with significant strategic and leadership accountabilities in the areas of Recruitment, Selection and Retention; Compensation; Performance Management, Competency Identification; Staff Training and Development; Change Management; Policy and Employee Relations and Succession Planning
  • Demonstrated experience delivering HR solutions that encompass the impacts of people, work culture and business outcomes, while aligning company operations with organization strategies, values and mandate
  • Extensive experience developing and implementing HR policies and practices within a diverse and/or complex environment including relevant employment laws and regulations
  • Computer proficiency of relevant software applications i.e. MS Office Suite, Humi by Employment Hero; experience managing online and social media HR tactics would be an asset
  • Experience working with the Public Sector Employers’ Council (PSEC) or equivalent governance body would be an asset
  • Experience working with subsidiary companies in Asian markets would be an asset.

  • Strong knowledge and extensive experience applying employment and human rights legislation
  • Demonstrated ability to build highly effective service-oriented teams
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, counsel and effectively influence stakeholders often within an environment of divergent objectives
  • Demonstrated ability showing initiative, conflict resolution and negotiation skills; as well as deal with sensitive and confidential information with tact and diplomacy
  • Strong leadership abilities within a team environment, establishing collaborative working relationships
  • Working knowledge and application of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility principles would be an asset
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts to groups, along with the ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources, analyze information and make recommendations for appropriate actions as necessary
  • Ability to support international offices during evening hours as required
  • Ability to travel internationally as required

The Director is expected to be comfortable working in a virtual and dynamic office environment and will be provided with the necessary technology and support to effectively execute regardless of location. 

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS 
The successful candidate has completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or a related field of discipline. An advanced degree is considered an asset.

COMPENSATION 
A competitive compensation package is provided, including base salary and a comprehensive total rewards package. This position is also eligible for the Province of British Columbia’s defined benefits pension plan. The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000 annually. The final compensation is dependent upon the qualifications of the successful candidate.
