The Director of People Operations (D, POPs) is a key strategic role for designing and implementing Mastery’s employee value proposition and back-of-house Human Resource policies, processes, and functions. The D, POPs supports the Senior Director of People Operations in leading the People Operations team (the people responsible for the systems of HR and Talent Acquisition) to drive an employee-focused, high-performance, outcomes-driven organizational culture. The Director is responsible for the oversight, delivery and management of the key HR functions of compensation and benefits and manages the Coordinator who supports compliance and on-boarding/off-boarding. The position leads strategy as well as collaborates with the other Talent leaders and teams at both the central office as well as across Mastery’s school campuses.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
Implement and assess the organization’s compensation philosophy via the compensation-setting process, additional compensation process, and annual performance review cycle, including development of training materials, toolkits, and other resources
Conduct compensation analysis and studies to assess pay equity and competitiveness including performing job evaluations, annual market pricing, FLSA reviews, and implement solutions-based on findings
Own the design, administration, communication, compliance and implementation of an inclusive and employee-centric strategy for all employee benefit programs (estimated at approximately $30M annually)
Act as the primary contact for benefit consultant team, carriers and third-party administrators
Manage internal and external vendor systems and other associated technology supporting benefit plans and salary analysis while working closely with Payroll and applicable constituents to monitor compliance.
Act as a trusted advisor and manage both central office and school-based relationships, ensuring exceptional personal interactions and norming across leaders for compensation and benefits issues
Maintain sound working knowledge of Mastery’s compliance with local, state, and federal labor and human relations laws – including ERISA, FLSA, ACA
Manage and develop the HR Coordinator and ensure they meet role expectations
Other Job Functions:
In partnership with the Senior Director, collaborate with the Finance Team to establish and review the annual budget for Mastery’s compensation and benefits initiatives
Serve as an internal consultant to the Employee Relations, Talent Acquisition, and School Leadership teams on a variety of topics
Identify and lead activities that build efficiencies, automation, standardization, and adoption of best practices regarding People Operations functions
Responsible for leading or managing all aspects of complex HR projects, as assigned - from inception to conclusion - ensuring regular project status communications to key stakeholders and team members
Complete other duties and special projects, as assigned
Qualifications:
Exceptional organization skills – a detail-oriented approach to multi-task and meet deadlines under pressure
Strong aptitude for data collection and analysis as well as ability to manage data platforms or portals

Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills both orally and in writing

Self-starter, with the ability to work well independently, as well as with a team
Ability to manage complex projects and prioritize appropriately
Skilled in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint)
Education and Experience:
HSD/GED, plus a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant, full-time, progressively more responsible experience, OR relevant Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of six (6) years of experience
Minimum of four (4) years of progressively more responsible experience in Human Resources Management, HR Operations, or other relevant area of HR that includes supervision and evaluation of others
HRCI and/or SHRM certification strongly preferred
Broad knowledge and experience in employment law, compensation, organizational development, employee relations, and/or training and development
Working knowledge of Pennsylvania and New Jersey regulations and employment law strongly preferred
Prior experience with training design and delivery a plus
Able to travel to urban based school facilities on a regular routine basis. Experience in urban schools or other educational settings a plus
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the role as outlined above, and to work in the environmental conditions required, such as traveling to network campuses, monitoring and interacting with students, in-person facilitation of trainings, etc.;
This role may require frequent travel between multiple locations. Reliable transportation is essential to fulfill job responsibilities
Salary and Bonus Information
The Director of People Operations at Mastery can expect a starting salary between $110,000- $121,550 based on education and experience, with opportunities for growth as your career progresses. Each offer is made in alignment with Mastery’s compensation philosophy and commitment to pay equity, ensuring fairness and consistency across our team.
